How to make a DIY stencil
To make a stencil, you will need:
- Photocopier (Xerox)
- Film for stencils (you can use file folders)
- Thin-tip Marker
- Breadboard knife
- Cutting mat (dressmaker) or new cutting board
- Glue spray
- Acrylic paints or other paints for your chosen surface
- Adhesive for decoupage on fabric (if working with fabric)
- Little brush
- Copy paper
Before you begin:
Wipe the surface to remove grease, dust and dirt. If you are going to transfer the pattern to the fabric, as we did, first wash the pillowcase. Then place it under the fabric in the place where you plan to apply the pattern, paper or plastic film so that the paint does not accidentally leak and do not color the other side of the pillowcase. While dyeing the fabric, mix acrylic with decoupage glue at the rate of 1: 2. This is done so that the applied drawing is resistant to washing. If you are making a large stencil for walls, prepare the wall by thoroughly cleaning it.
1. Choose a pattern
Choose a design design from the Internet, books, magazines or beautiful fabric (we took our flower from the calendar). Copy the picture on the xerox, enlarging or reducing the picture so that it fits the size of the item you want to decorate.
On the mat, trim your pattern with a breadboard knife. Glue the clipping to the sheet of carbon paper (so that the pattern does not puff over the edges). Then apply a film on top and circle the pattern using a thin rod marker. Remove paper and clipping from the film.
3. Make a negative
Glue the film with the outline on the mat using adhesive tape. Cut the pattern inside the contour with a breadboard knife, pressing hard. Try not to tear the knife from the film, moving from one part of the drawing to another (this will be smoother). Then remove the inner cut out part and remove the adhesive tape. Your stencil at home is almost ready.
4. Paint the surface
Spread a rag to protect the work area from stains. Spray the glue spray on one side of the stencil and stick the film to the desired location. Make sure that all edges are firmly pressed to the surface and not budge. Then fill the pattern with two coats of paint, taking a break of 30 minutes. You can also make a stencil on the floor.
5. Remove the stencil
Let the paint dry for several minutes before removing the stencil. The drawing should dry (about 24 hours) before you start using this or that thing in your interior. Done! Now you know how to make a stencil yourself.
Stencils for letters
A great idea that you can implement with your child is a stencil for letters. It can be made from different materials, such as cardboard or plastic. The fastest and easiest to manufacture will be a paper stencil. To create it, you will need to prepare templates - letters or pictures - depending on what you plan to do. Transfer these drawings to the main material of the stencil and carefully cut them with a clerical knife. You can also create stencils for numbers and more - everything is limited only by your imagination. Show the child how to make a stencil of letters, and he will be happy to do this creative thing!
